You can do it by using Custom CSS in your style. Here's a link to a post with some info, and some links to other posts.

Bear in mind, this method only hides the entries. So if there's a whole bunch of them in a row, that page of your Network might suddenly look shorter, and if you use the page summary module in your style, you will see the entries listed.

Your subscribe and filter off option will definitely work and if you usually read with a filter is the easiest way to go.
