Given the new LJ TOS (which is really a POS) and the CHECHNYAN CONCENTRATION CAMPS FOR GAY PEOPLE, moving away from LiveJournal is a requirement. I started trying to import the LJ comm twispitefic from LJ to Dreamwidth yesterday (currently open to fic and crossover deconstructions written about Twilight, Fifty Shades, and Barbara G. Walker's Feminist Fairy Tales, which, trust me, are about as feminist as a Cro-Magnon). The profile, the tags, the sidebar, etc. have moved over; the entries and comments have not.

I'm not sure if this is a delay in the queue or if there's a problem with importing a community. Either way, I need some help. I really don't want six years of stories to vanish, and the members of the comm are urging me to move it to Dreamwidth immediately. Which I'd be more than happy to do.

This is important, because the comm Das_Sporking also has to be imported to das_sporking2. (There is a Das_Sporking comm on Dreamwidth, but it has not been updated since 2013, and the only mod for it hasn't been around for almost a year.) Das_Sporking has been around for about eight years, and there are a LOT of posts and comments to import. No one wants to lose the entries and comments, but we can't remain on LJ under Russian law (including the anti-gay law) either. And many of our members have said that Das_Sporking is the only reason that they still have an LJ account.

For the record, this is what I'm seeing on the Import Journal page:

Is there a way to import only some of the LJ entries (by date)? I need to import all of 2012 and 2013 but cant figure out how to do it without redoing all the entries

Hello! I came over from LJ a little while ago, imported my journal and everything, and ever since I've been crossposting to LJ. Now, I'd like to ask if it's possible to import the comments I've got on LJ to those crossposted entries, or if I import comments again, will it also bring over everything else? In other words, does the program realize that the posts & some comments are already here, and import only the new comments? I've a feeling that I'll eventually leave the whole LJ behind, but there are some comments I'd like to keep. Thanks!

I just imported my journal, with comments. According to my profile page, I now have 27,374 comments (and I maybe had 20 before the import).

Um, where are they? They don't seem to be attached to the entries. Is this a "data is big, check back tomorrow" kind of thing, or did something go wrong? (The import page reports success.) Thanks!

Exporting journal to LJ?

I know that there is a way to import journals from LJ. Is there a way to export DW journals to LJ? Or do I need to go in, edit individual posts and crosspost from there? Silly me only recently decided to synchronize all my journals. Took me a while to realize that it isn't a complex process. :)

Importing comments and banning users

I have a bit of a conundrum.

I periodically import my LJ entries and comments to my DW journal.

However, someone on my LJ friendslist just told me they'd be much happier if their comments to my LJ didn't appear on DW.

As far as I know there's no way to prevent a specific user's comments from importing, so I thought I'd try to get the same result by banning the LJ user's OpenID from commenting on my DW.

Sadly, that doesn't seem to work.

Does anyone know why? When the banned LJ user's OpenID tries to comment on my journal here the banning feature works perfectly...Was I wrong to think the importer would respect my banning preferences or what?

Does anyone know of any other tricks to get what I was trying to do? Thanks.

Re-import Question

I recently learned that re-importing does not create duplicate entries, but will sync and update.

I imported during beta and have been crossposting ever since. Every once in a while, I customize crossposted entries on the other site.

So if syncing happens, will the customized posts lose their customization, would the DW post take on the customization or would they show up as separate posts because they are not identical?

Hi! One of many newbies here. I've imported one journal, and I see that it's possible to merge journals by importing another one into the first one.

My question is, is it possible to select only certain entries from the second journal for import? Say, ones which have a specific tag? I know that's asking for a lot, but it would be really convenient.

At the moment, you can only import from LiveJournal-based hosts, but does anyone know when it will be possible to import content from Wordpress-based blogs? Is this in the works or did it get put on the back burner? [ETA: a bug is filed on this in Bugzilla, but no-one's volunteered to code it yet]

Hi there. When I first joined DW, I imported my LJ blog. Since then, mostly out of habit, I've still been primarily using LJ rather than posting here and cross-posting to LJ. I'd like to start moving more permanently over here, and am wondering if it's now possible to import the blog entries from LJ between when I last imported and now. If I submit another import request, will I get duplicates for the (4 years or so) worth that I've already imported?

Importing Memories

I finally bit the bullet and bought myself a nifty Premium Paid account, so I imported pretty much everything that was importable from LiveJournal to DW. Alas, it looks like Memories are not part of that...or are they? I imported before I bought the account, so I'm wondering if I should re-import in order to get my Memories (category keywords for the memories, and what entries are in those categories), or if

a) that's not even possible; I should do it manually
or
b) it is possible but it'll result in boatloads of duplicates

Anyone know? I tried searching the FAQ, but it just mentions the memory basics, like what they are and such, nothing about importing.

Also, there's no tag about memories here, so... :D

I'm specifically trying to find out if it would be possible *in the future* just to import certain entries from a journal based on tag or between a certain time period or something. We're still in beta so I'm not concerned about it much yet, but I can't find the "wishlist" page I used to have bookmarked and I could have sworn it mentioned something about the importation system on there.

Importing LJ without tags and access lists

I have a question about importing. I want to import my LJ account, but I don't want to import the tags or the access lists/filters applied to the posts. If I import comments, it states that it will import all journal entries. Are the entries imported as public or private? I don't mind if everything imported is set to private initially. I can manually turn on which items I want to be public. I do, however, want to make sure that not everything shows up as public.

Does this make sense at all?

Friends lists and icons...

Appologies in advance for the noob-ish questions! I've gone and imported both my journals on LJ, and all my friends have access to this account. I've combed the FAQ a few times now, but I still can't find it - what do I have to do now to view my friends posts here on my reading list? (A fairly simple how-to-for-the-noob would be really nice!) Or has this not been implemented yet?

Also, when I imported my journal entries, every single entry was given my default icon/user pic, regardless of what icon I used for that post on LJ, even when I imported all my icons. Is this something I just have to put up with?

(ETA: Actually, logging out and in again seems to have restored my original icon settings. Yay!)

Synching comments?

I'm one of those people who are cross-posting to DW and LJ with comments on DW disabled and am redirecting people to LJ to comment. I did this in the conviction that I would be able to update my DW journal with the comments from LJ as soon as I'm ready to move to DW completely.

Reading the entries at this comm, though, I'm realizing that importing comments will automatically re-import my entries, too. That wouldn't be such a huge problem, as long as I can import back to a specific date--say, all entries plus comments of the last week or so. Is this possible? Or can I only import complete journals?

Any help would be muchly appreciated.

Following the latest code push, I was wondering about the possibility of importing the few entries on my IJ that have comments into my DWJ.

And so I ask:

Does checking the option for Journal comments ONLY mean a re-import of all entries (those without comments too) or would the importer only import (and thus duplicate?) the entries that have comments attached to them?

Anyone know?

Importing: Comments never arrived

I imported my LJ and it brought the entries (apparently fine - haven't looked in detail yet).

However, while it says in my inbox that comments were imported successfully, NONE of them arrived. I also tried re-importing and adding the "add friends" (the one where it creates the OpenID to add to my access list?) and it, again, said that comments were successfully imported - but none have arrived.

I don't know what I did wrong, and I don't know how to fix it. Help!

Importing my fic journal from LJ?

Is there any way of mirroring _readingroom, my fic journal on LJ, to a comm here? The DW importer currently doesn't support the import of communities, and I do get that most comms have content by several people, but my fic is one of the main things I want to use DW for.

Does anyone know if there's a workaround for this, a script or something (preferably for Mac, not Windows - although if it's only for Windows I'm sure I could find a friend to help me out) that I could use? Or will the DW importer at some point support communities so I could just wait until that time (because I really don't want to lose all my lovely comments)?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Edit: I remembered ljmigrate, which works with comms as well. Haven't been able to test it with DW yet, but it worked with LJ and JournalFen. The one drawback is that it only archives comments, doesn't migrate them.

Importing after having crossposted

I have a question about the import, mostly to clarify, since it's already a done deal for me. I imported my LJ after having cross-posted for a couple weeks, and the import duplicated the cross-posted entries. This is not a problem, I didn't post that much, but it's an argument for not waiting too long to import. :D

My question is: I did all my cross-posting through Semagic, not the DW cross-post option. Would it have made any difference if I had used the DW option, do you guys know? If not, are there plans for that in the future--for the importer to know a post was cross-posted, and A.) not duplicate it, and B.) add in the comments from the other post (I suspect that's the hard part)?

And now I'm not at all sure if this is the right comm for this question. *crosses fingers*

Import weirdness - XMLRPC failure

I've successfully imported several times in the past, but today when i tried it I got the following:

XMLRPC failure: Client error: Invalid text encoding: Cannot display this post. Please see http://www.livejournal.com/support/encodings.bml for more information.

I checked the encodings page, read the explanation, and figured it meant that some weird characters had gotten into the posts somehow. But both posts look completely innocuous. I checked the known issues in the wiki, but didn't see anything that looked like this at first glance.

Importing query & tags query

Hello,

Firstly:

I've successfully imported my entries from LJ, but haven't tried to import anything from insane journal yet aside from icons. There are very few entries there which are anything other than a mirror of what was on LJ but the ones that differ have comments. The rest don't.

If I clicked the import comments: implies entries would I get the duplicate entries I don't want, or only the select few that have comments on them?

Secondly:

In regards to tags, over on LJ they seem to fill themselves in semi-automatically after the first few letters typed into the tag bar. That function doesn't seem to be working over here as yet - not on my tag entry page at least.

Is this a glitch?

editing via crosspost?

Is it possible to edit older entries that were imported from LJ over to DW using the crosspost feature?

Because I just tried it three times... the first time, it did seem like something had changed... I was changing a public entry to a filtered one, and added a tag. The tag didn't appear, but the HTML had that "changed over from DW" look to it, and the entry became flocked, though not filtered.

But then I tried it twice more, once with a public entry, once with a flocked one, and nothing happend. So now I'm wondering if I was just imagining the first edit (or just confused one post for another in the midst of trying this) and it's not actually possible... or if it is possible, but buggy at the moment.

Has anyone else tried this? And if it's not something that's possible right now... could it be, in the future? Because it would be SO awesome to be able to re-tag in Dreamwidth and have it appear over at LJ, instead of having to re-tag two journals. :D

Userpic import question

I have a question about what might happen when importing userpics from two different sites, and hope someone has tried this already.

Let us say that I have the same pics on both sites, with the same keywords. Let us say I've imported one set already.

If I import the second set, I suspect what will happen is that the first set will get bumped into that "keyword is now a number" state and the second set will take over. Does anyone know if this is, in fact, the case?

I think I followed all the instructions correctly, as my tags, etc. were imported according to the message in my DW inbox. However, when I look at the Import Status in the Import Helper, I get this:

Does that mean it's working? Forgive me if this is a stupid question, it just wasn't obvious to me and I"m not sure if there's something I missed.

When Importing is a bad decision

I imported all my old LJ entries, and now I think I made the wrong decision. Is there any way to delete more than one entry at a time, or am I stuck deleting each one individually? I have several years of regular posting, so that would be a pain.
