the dreamwidth site says it will open next week in the PM. but I have my account open now with an invite code from somebody else. Is my account still valid?
Sure is. The only different is the site is currently in Closed Beta, which means an invite or OpenID is the only way to get in and make an account. When Open Beta starts next week, people will start being able to buy their way in. But you won't have to, because you're already here. :)
The best statement of what Dreamwidth is about is probably here.
As far as "you are't going to to compete with Lj are you?" goes, I know somewhere or other there's an official statement about that. I'm not in any way an "official" voice of Dreamwidth here, just a fellow member, but I can tell you from my recollection that Dreamwidth's business plan is not "steal all of LJ's users." synecdochic has a lot of interesting things about the philosophy of Dreamwidth and its relationship to LJ, and she is an official voice.
Actually it's probably better to link to denise in this case - the idea of having a staff account is that official posts will be made from *that* account, and that anything said from a non-staff account shouldn't be treated as if it were a staff member talking, I believe.
[edit: ...meh, I thought I had scrolled down enough already. Maybe not. D: Sorry for the repetition.]
