Making userpics

I realise that this isn't entirely Dreamwidth-specific, but I'm looking to make myself some userpics, something I've never even tried before.

Can anybody here point me towards some good icon making tutorials?

I'm using GIMP, but I have no clue how much that'll affect it.

http://www.katspace.org/graphics/digitart/ includes pointers about icon making.

Also, http://community.livejournal.com/gimp_users/ and http://community.livejournal.com/gimp_tutorial/ are Gimp-related LJ comms. (sorry, I got the URLs wrong!)

I'd recommend obsessiveicons - they have a lot of good icons and bases and a few tutorials.

There's a new DW comm, graphic_tutorials, run by friends of mine, and some of them have GIMP instructions! :)

There's a comm on LJ called icon_tutorial which I really like - they have a nice archive section and you can find pretty much anything.
