Tags question

Okay, so DW has larger maximums than LJ for just about everything - longer comment lengths, longer entry lengths, longer tag lengths, longer username lengths, etcetera, etcetera.

Any chance we'll get a larger maximum number of tags? Because I have one account for which 1000 isn't going to cut it.

(Is this the right place to ask? I thought there was a "request features" comm, but now I can't find it.)

The tag limit is a technical limit -- it's to keep things from crashing/timing out when viewing the tags page.

I brought a friend (vanillafluffy) to Dreamwidth, but I don't think she'll stay because of that tag limit. You can find her complaints in her journal.

I don't care for myself, but I thought you might want to know.

LJ has the same limit, though. They had to implement it after a certain point, so anyone who had more than a thousand tags before that point can continue to have that many tags (just not create new ones), but past that point nobody can have more than a thousand tags.

(Large numbers of tags make the site unusable for everyone, because it puts too much load on the database.)

FYI, 1000 tags is the same limit LJ has for free accounts. The paid/premium account limits (1500/2000) are higher than LJ's.

I get that there needs to be a limit, yeah. I'm just wondering if the current limit could be raised by a finite number without bringing the database crashing down.

as zvi mentioned, paid and premium accounts have increased tag limits: 1500 and 2000 respectively. see the paid account FAQ for more details.
