Notification problems

This might not be the right place to ask, but I've no idea where the right place is :(

Last night, comments started appearing in my inbox in addition to being emailed to me. I searched through the FAQs and it said something about how this being a side effect of how the notification system works. It seems to be the same thing that's started happening at livejournal, only when there it's stopped sending me any and all notifications of replies to posts that I've made in communities.

So my questions are:

a) If this is how the system works, why has this only just started happening?
b) If this is a recent change, will it have the same effect on community comments as it has on livejournal?
c) If it does have that effect, how can I fix it? I don't care whether I get notifications through emails or the inbox, but I do really need some form of notification because of my memory problems.
d) Does any of this make any sense, or am I the only person who's worried about any of this?

Thanks for any help you can give me. If I don't reply to anyone here within the next 24 hours, assume that the community comments thing is a problem XD

You might try opening a support ticket about this?

This means that you turned on the "new" notification system, as opposed to the "old" notification system (terminology held over from LJ, where there's new and old, as opposed to DW, where everything's new).

To go back to getting comments only by email, not in your inbox, here's what you can do:

1. Load http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/settings/?cat=notifications
2. Uncheck both "Someone replies to any comment I make*" and " Someone comments on any entry in my journal"
3. Save your choices.
4. Go back to that page. Both boxes should still be unchecked. Now, check only "Someone replies to any comment I make*" and save.
5. The page, when you reload, will have both boxes checked. However, you will only receive email notifications, not inbox notifications. You'll get email both when someone comments in your journal and when someone replies to a comment of yours elsewhere.

Every time you change your notification settings, you'll have to do this again.

No worries, it's not exactly intuitive. :)

Should we document this? The last time I asked I was told no, cos it's such a hack. But I would really really like it to be in the FAQ and not just buried in a comment thread on a community somewhere.

The goal is to eventually get rid of the "old" system entirely anyway, so this hack will eventually no longer work. So probably not a good idea to document it.

I really don't want it in a FAQ, because a). it is a hack and b). we plan to migrate the other-journal replies to ESN as well.
