Can anyone tell me whether DW either has a way to change the security of past entries en masse (eg changing all past entries from public to access only) OR to delete past entries en masse?

Yes, but only if you have a paid account. If you do, you can do so here: http://www.dreamwidth.org/editprivacy

Mass deletion isn't available for security reasons (way too easy for a hacker to wipe out all your content with very little time or effort). Mass privacy change does exist but is a paid feature. See FAQ 112 for more info.

Awesome. :) Sorry for the deletion, I thought I was replying to your personal journal. :)

If you think to do this before importing, you can set your account's default entry security to access only (or private), then import -- a minimum security setting will override any less-secure entries coming in. http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/settings/?cat=privacy

I don't believe that this dodge can be used after import, however; you'd have to use editprivacy or a client or something.
