G Mail Threading

I know a lot of people get their dreamwidth comments sent to gmail and a lot of us are unhappy that the threading is not the relatively simple issue it is on LJ.

The only workaround for the issue at the moment is to add subject lines to your comments. That doesn't make the threading work completely right, but at least it means you won't have 40 message 'conversations' from 10 or 12 different DW entries.

If you can't think of a subject line, why not just repeat the subject line of the entry you're reading? If the entry you're reading also does not have a subject line, just repeat the first line of your comment.

I've been trying it for the past couple of days, and it is better. (Not perfect, because I haven't gotten in the habit 100% yet.) But it's better.

It's a really good idea, and not too bad a habit to have anyway.

Thanks!

Oh, thank you -- I haven't gotten enough DW comments yet to have even noticed! *carefully puts in a subject*

That will take some getting used to.

This used to happen with LJ back in the early days of Gmail, too. I got my Gmail acct in June 2004, and I remember giving feedback to Gmail about it.

I might be able to help with this if it was fixed by a Gmail change, not something LJ did. PM if that's the case.

We are nearly positive that it was a Gmail change, since the headers of a LJ comment email are identical to the headers of a DW comment email, and yet Gmail treats them differently.

You can email me and Mark -- the_bosses@dwscoalition.org -- if you know of anything that we can do that will help!

I've looked and can't find the evidence, I probably deleted it. Gmail was specifically requesting feedback since it was still early days ... either they emailed me/everyone or there was a link on the homepage (or when you logged in). I specifically remember that I said, you know, this is not the biggest deal in the world but it is *very* annoying. (Also, I gave out a lot of gmail invites to my LJ flist, so I knew I was not the only person finding it weird and annoying. I'm generally not the type to file bug reports.)

This leads me to think that it was gmail and not LJ that fixed the issue. It took about a month (?) but the issue did resolve.
