Gifts for both the Rare Pair Exchange and the 10 Items or Less Exchange just revealed the other day, so let me tell you about what I received!

In the Rare Pair Exchange, I got a Porn Without Plot offering for a canon triad from the show Sense8! I was stunned and appalled when Sense8 was cancelled so abruptly, right when the cluster had finally come into its own as a unit and they were learning more about other clusters, and about the whole 'other species?' thing... Ugh, I'll never not be upset about losing the next season of that show. But at least through fan fiction I can recapture some of the feelings of watching it!

In my prompt letter, I mentioned how I worried for Rajan, Kala's husband, who is not part of our point-of-view cluster of eight brain-linked people. He's married to one -- Kala -- and she's clearly having a passionate brain-to-brain affair with Wolfgang, another person from the cluster... but Rajan can't participate in the brain stuff. He's not linked to them. His only real way of knowing what's going on is if someone tells him. And sure, he's Kala's legal husband; he's rich, and he actually seems like a stand-up guy. But could any of that compete with the scorching hot looks that Kala and Wolfgang are continually trying to hide when they glance at each other?? :-(

Anyway, I wanted a story where maybe Rajan could be taken care of, and my anonymous author delivered!

waves that push and pull against me
Author: Anonymous (for now)
Fandom: Sense8 (TV)
Ship: Wolfgang Bogdanow/Kala Dandekar/Rajan Rasal
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Wordcount: 2,138

Summary: "My husband," she said, "just relax. We'll take care of everything."

[Or, it's Rajan's birthday and his partners are eager to please him]

In this fic, I appreciated that Rajan was being spoiled rotten with multiple sex acts for his birthday, and that the day showed no signs of slowing down, haha! Good for them. I also liked knowing that being part of an eight-person cluster that included other people with a ton of sexual experience meant that both Kala and Wolfgang are good at a bunch of esoteric sex skills! Yay for that!

My worries about Rajan have been relieved. Whew! This is much better for him than his awkward medical scene in the Sense8 movie, which had me cringing so hard in sympathy.

For the 10 Items or Less exchange, I received a short scene featuring Darcy Lewis and Jane Foster from the Thor movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I love pining and yearning, and I thought there was plenty of room for Darcy to be pining for her science partner / roommate / "friend" and thinking that she doesn't stand a chance against someone like Thor. I mean, look at him, right??

Unspoken Things
Author: badwrongprincess
Fandom: Thor (Movies)
Ship: Jane Foster/Darcy Lewis
Rating: Teen
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Wordcount: 1,183

Summary: Darcy could never have imagined that when she had signed up to be Jane Foster’s assistant her life would lead her to this little apartment in London. Or flat, as they.

(I think there are a few missing words at the end there... but I didn't want to say anything and pollute the author's experience of posting this fic with my unwanted line edits)

I enjoyed participating in both these exchanges, and am glad to have sparked two (TWO!) stories that are not M/M! I love M/M, don't get me wrong, but it's nice when there's a wide variety of stories to read, and we need more F/F and also poly triad M/F/M stories. So yay, I'm helping!

Good News

Good news includes all the things which make us happy or otherwise feel good. It can be personal or public. We never know when something wonderful will happen, and when it does, most people want to share it with someone. It's disappointing when nobody is there to appreciate it. Happily, blogging allows us to share our joys and pat each other on the back.

What good news have you had recently? Are you anticipating any more? Have you found a cute picture or a video that makes you smile? Is there anything your online friends could do to make your life a little happier?

Before plants or animals, fungi conquered Earth’s surface

Fungi were Earth’s first ecosystem engineers, thriving long before plants ever took root.

Fungi’s evolutionary roots stretch far deeper than once believed — up to 1.4 billion years ago, long before plants or animals appeared. Using advanced molecular dating and gene transfer analysis, researchers reconstructed fungi’s ancient lineage, revealing they were crucial in shaping Earth’s first soils and ecosystems

Video appointment with chemotherapist today. I'm done with immunotherapy! The scan says I've been stable.

I still have:

* bone strengthening (not marrow encouraging) med every 12 weeks, infused
* Scans every 3 months

So that means a trip or two to the cancer center every 3 months, although if they keep it at 3 months for the one and 12 weeks for the other, they may fall out of sync.

I should probably celebrate this?

Rules: How many letters of the alphabet have you used for starting a fic title? One fic per line, ‘A’ and 'The’ do not count for 'a’ and ’t’. Post your score out of 26 at the end, along with your total fic count.

I pinched this one from [personal profile] thisbluespirit (though I've seen it since all across the f-list) and started from my most recent fic and worked backwards snagging the first instance of each letter.

A - Another Day, Another Disaster (Good Omens, Aziraphale & Crowley, Adam & The Them)
B - Between Stimulation and Reaction (Leverage, Eliot Spencer/Parker/Alex Hardison, Eliot Spencer/Sophie Deveraux, Eliot Spencer/Others)
C - Cola, Bleach and Other Dangerous Chemicals (Birds of Prey, Harley Quinn, Cassie Cain, Joker)
D - Done Deal (Leverage, Eliot Spencer/Parker/Alec Hardison)
E - Eilean a 'Cheo (Rivers of London, Beverley Brook/Peter Grant, Abdul Haqq Walid, OCs)
F - Four Meals (Good Omens, Aziraphale/Crowley)
G - Gold Standard(The Thing in the Tunnels Wants Rather More) (The Thing In The Walls Wants Your Spare Change, Caro, Aly, Dragons)
H - Hiding in Plain Sight (Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers/Maria Rambeau)
I - If Wishes Were Spaceships (Wolf 359, Doug Eiffel/Hera)
J - Joined By The Westering Wind (Pacific Rim, Rayleigh/Mako)
K - Knives Out of Context (Leverage, Parker/Alec Hardison)
L - Like the Arms of the Ocean (Birds of Prey, Cassandra Cain & Harleen Quinzel)
M - Midnight Special (Leverage, Eliot Spencer/Mr Quinn)
N - No Happy Ending (Forest 404, Pan/Daria)
O - Of Salt and Candles (Good Omens, Aziraphale & Crowley)
P - Practical Arrangements and Practical Jokes (Ghostbusters, Jillian Holtzman/Abby Yates)
Q -
R - Robots Need Hugs Too (Wolf 359, Doug Eiffel, Hera, Alana Maxwell)
S - Someone You Couldn't Lose (Ocean's Eight, Daphne Kluger/Debbie Ocean/Lou Miller)
T - Taking The Shine Off The Stars (The Mummy, Ardeth Bay/Evy Carnahan O'Connell/Rick O'Connell)
U - The Universe Is Drifting Apart (Ghostbusters, Jillian Holtzmann/Patty Tolan)
V - A Voice From The Stars (Wolf 359, Doug Eiffel, Hera, Mr Cutter)
W - Weapon of Choice (James Bond Movies, Bond/M, Bond/Q, Bond & Moneypenny)
X -
Y - You Wear It Well (Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers/Maria Rambeau)
Z -

23/26 from 200 fics on AO3. Unsurprisingly no Q, X or Z - I did wonder if I might have a Q somewhere, but if I do it must be a drabble or comment fic that never got archived. I thought it was going to be a much worse turn out as after a strong start there was a lot of repetition in first letters but my Wolf 359 fic did me a solid with I, R and V after nearly two pages of nothing but Cs, Ls, Ms, Ss and Ts it felt like.

Sarah Russell of The Ostomy Studio, the person who made such an enormous difference to my general State Of Being just over a year ago via the medium of a private Pilates lesson pre-surgery, has just announced publication of the new Exercise and Physical Activity after Stoma Surgery best practice guidelines that she's been working on for literal years along with some amazing collaborators!

The principles here are the bedrock for the private lesson I had before surgery, and are also what I used as my foundation for rehab despite not after all needing to work with a stoma; I've not read them in full, but if you know folk they might be of interest to then please do pass the link on <3

not on my bingo card

Well, I didn't have this event on my bingo card for this year. (That's an actual thing, and it's not long until I have to review it for accuracy from the news this year.) Wearing my "animal rights" cap, this news headline is just awful all around.

Law enforcement kills several monkeys after truck hauling them overturns in Mississippi.
According to authorities, the Rhesus monkeys were on their way to a testing facility in Florida after being at Tulane University. The monkeys were 40 pounds and were first reported to be “aggressive,” as well as also carrying hepatitis C, herpes, and COVID.

Thankfully, the writer included the necessary Oxford comma near the end of that sentence. I had to chuckle, though. This event is an eerie metaphorical summary for 2025.

Edit 2025 Oct 29:
The metaphor gets even better. Those poor monkeys were not infectious (according to Tulane University), so they were killed by authorities for no good reason, based on early misinformation.

and therefore not what the doctor(or Dan Savage, for instance) might have ordered--me over a notebook is novel like a thing that is not, clearly, no *transgressions* there, but the haunted house fiction class was a little bit better last night...

It would be a little better to watch us form into a group if there were more than two more sessions. Not that I exactly want to ponder a genre I don't really have a feel for every Monday night forever and ever, amen. But I am taking a shot and even living with not being the star in a way my fifteen-year-old self might not believe, so that is a tiny shoot of growth, even if it might not be worth the price of this thing.(Maybe the plot bunny about a haunted mall might be if I wrote it, not sure if I will. It's often hard to read a lot and write a lot at the same time, but I jotted thoughts down anyway.
Probably not taking Anne Elliot's class next month, as it is more expensive and I think I need to give extra Zoom a rest after this. But I will e-mail her if I ever get a pub date for Wedded Twist, short version. She's a great instructor/workshop leader and took a flattering interest.

(Nice smart people, nobody I even imagined sending a flirty comment to at a moment when I might imagine chemistry with damn near anybody...but it's probably okay because the closest person is in L.A. or Orange County or something and even if he were pine-worthy,(Nope, gay in a way that's easy to spot. Smart, though. Thorough reader in a way I've never quite mastered.) I think I have "Long-Distance Yearnings" fully covered anyway.

Not sure these links are particularly appropriate, but maybe so.

Well, I do remember her saying she scarcely noticed The Change, though she did nuance that statement by adding that she had so much else going on at the time (eldercare and other stuff) she didn't have time to notice:

Yet more on monetising the menopause: Menopause getting you down? Don’t worry, the wellness industry has a very pricey solution for you.

I am probably being horribly cynical, but when somebody goes for a home birth after a first high risk experience of parturition, one does wonder if some kind of wellness woowoo was in the mix (“She had read or heard somewhere that there was less chance of bleeding at home and that is why she wanted a home birth.”)? but this is a dreadful story: 'Gross failure’ led to deaths of mother and baby in Prestwich home birth.

This is also a really grim story about reproductive politics in Brazil: Two More Weeks: The Brutality Behind Brazil’s Reproductive Politics:

In complicated childbirth scenarios, when the life of the pregnant person and the fetus are in conflict, therapeutic abortion has historically been considered the last resort. But in Brazil, since the nineteenth century, this solution has been replaced by the cesarean operation. This was not based on medical reasons. Cesarean sections, up until the early twentieth century, were rudimentary procedures, almost always fatal to the birthing person. What motivated its adoption in Brazil was based on different logics: religious, legal, and moral. The cesarean became an acceptable alternative to abortion because it allowed the fetus to be born, even if the birthing parent died. The nineteenth-century theological and medical debates that gave rise to this sacrificial logic still shape birth in Brazil.

Synchrony between 'Catholic and fundamentalist Evangelical actors... promoting cesarean as a morally acceptable alternative to abortion' in present day.

Today is cloudy and cool.

I haven't fed the birds yet, but we heard a great horned owl hoo-hooing out in our yard!  :D  That's awesome.  I don't think we've had one since a few years back when an owl and several crows fought over the yard for the whole summer.

EDIT 10/28/25 -- I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, possibly goldfinches.

I put out water for the birds.

It's spitting rain.
