editing via crosspost?

Is it possible to edit older entries that were imported from LJ over to DW using the crosspost feature?

Because I just tried it three times... the first time, it did seem like something had changed... I was changing a public entry to a filtered one, and added a tag. The tag didn't appear, but the HTML had that "changed over from DW" look to it, and the entry became flocked, though not filtered.

But then I tried it twice more, once with a public entry, once with a flocked one, and nothing happend. So now I'm wondering if I was just imagining the first edit (or just confused one post for another in the midst of trying this) and it's not actually possible... or if it is possible, but buggy at the moment.

Has anyone else tried this? And if it's not something that's possible right now... could it be, in the future? Because it would be SO awesome to be able to re-tag in Dreamwidth and have it appear over at LJ, instead of having to re-tag two journals. :D

Crossposting Autoformat Annoyances

If you are a pedant like me, you probably write your posts in raw HTML, and check Disable Auto-Formatting in the editor.

Unfortunately, when you crosspost the entry to a LJ-based site, the markup:

<p>paragraph one</p>
<p>paragraph two</p>

shows up as:

<p>paragraph one</p><br><p>paragraph two</p>

Because, most likely by default, the auto-formatter is handling the inbound post.

I've opened Bug 904 to see about addressing this on the DW side, however, there is a workaround:

If you are writing markup for your posts, before you save, remove the carriage returns between block-level elements (p, blockquote, div, etc..)

Then the auto-formatter won't try to insert <br> between then.

Threading problem

I just figured out how to follow the install a Mixit theme directions. After a bit modding, I went to check how the comments looked and discovered that the "expand comments" function isn't working right. Instead of expanding them on the main page, it goes to the sub thread. Anyone know how to fix this?

Dreamwidth, OpenID delegation, and Journalfen

The ease of cross-site OpenID and importing journals from other sites is one of the coolest things about Dreamwidth, but not all the other sites are as seamless as DW, alas.

For example, Journalfen is one of the LJ clone site from which you can import to DW, but it does not have a functioning OpenID server. So it is difficult to actually use the openID JF accounts that the Dreamwidth importer creates. However you can still use a JF OpenID by using OpenID delegation. That is, link your JF page to an account that does have an OpenID server, and Dreamwidth will use that server to give you a JF OpenID. I've written a tutorial, intended for people who know nothing about what they're doing, that will walk you through setting up openID delegation for a Journalfen account. If you're interested in setting up an OpenID account for another personal blog or website, the notes at the beginning should also help you out.

In terms of DW, you will be able to use a delegated openID like any other openID account, and to claim and put an icon on imported comments originally made on that account, and eventually associate that account with your personal account. It will not affect your ability to use the OpenID account you delegated to (so, I delegated my JF openID to my LJ, but my LJ openID account still functions completely separately and it counts as another openID account for invite code lottery purposes)

The basics of OpenID delegation, and picking a server to delegate to. )

And you should now be set! Thanks to [personal profile] zvi and [personal profile] stellar_dust for helping out with this. (And [personal profile] afuna, an ancient S2 tutorial of whose let me finally figure out how I had to do this in S2.) If you have any questions about delegating, or you have problems working through this tutorial, leave a comment & someone will try to answer.

Meaningless Babble! (Or, terms you've never heard before, but everybody else seems to know.)

Because Dreamwidth welcomes a wide variety of people, not everybody uses the same terminology. This can lead to some confusion, particularly when someone says something as if everybody should know what they're talking about, and yet you have no idea what they mean. There are terms in common use with some people that other people have just never run into before. Use of jargon is rarely intended to be exclusive. Jargon tends to come into use within a particular group, and is used to precisely and concisely describe things that the group encounters on a regular basis. Once a term has come into popular use within a group, people who use that term can forget that not everyone knows it, since they are so used to using it, and a majority of the people around them on a regular basis also know and use it.

Some Dreamwidth-specific terminology is still being developed. Other Dreamwidth terminology has been inherited from the LiveJournal codebase. Terms that are used in the site and directly related to the site will eventually wind up in a FAQ, or some other form of user guide. Some things are defined in the FAQs already.

But not all of the words being cheerfully tossed around by owners, developers, and power users are Dreamwidth-specific. Take "spoons". It is a shorthand for "finite physical/mental/emotional resources to handle daily tasks", and comes from the disability-advocacy community.

To make everybody less confused, there's a wiki page with common jargon and some resources. (Note: the Urban Dictionary, which is linked from the Common Jargon page, is particularly known for having puerile and not-safe-for-work content, so use at your own risk.)

If there's some term you've been wondering about, even if you don't think it's likely to actually relate to Dreamwidth, let us know! You're probably not the only one who's not familiar with it. If there's some term that you've been needing to define to people a whole lot, consider adding it to the wiki!

Core v1 Layouts: Unknown View Fix

[personal profile] tree suggested I post this here, and I live to serve.

If you've imported a layout from LiveJournal and the "unknown view" link is annoying you, I might just have the solution over here. It also shows how to get rid of the duplicate "memories" link that appears on certain styles such as Smooth Sailing and Mixit.

Raw code

Hi, I'm a bit confused about what code tags to use when I want to display raw html code. A few of the entries linked about the place tell me I should be using the <raw-code> tag but that doesn't appear to work. I tried <pre> and <lj-raw> but none of them seem to work.

I know I can hard code the tags using &lt; to get a < and &gt; to get a > but I'm lazy. lol

Is this something that just doesn't work on DW yet, or am I using the wrong tags?

Granting Access/Subscribing Shortcuts

I've recently arrived to dreamwidth (er, hi everyone!) and after trying to friend find the people I already know and catch up with the people like me coming on the new wave of invites, I noticed something cool and neat.

If you have your dreamwidth inbox set to notify you about people subscribing or granting access, you can go check them out or immediately subscribe/grant access back directly from your inbox.

Also, if you just pass your cursor over their username at ANYTIME, a box will come up to join communities, subscribe, grant access automatically rather than going to their profile and all these added steps.

Maybe this is something utterly profound and/or everyone knew about already but me, but I thought these features were really cool, so I wanted to share with everyone else.

Another filtering question

I noticed in my 'manage filters' file that the fields containing friends and comms to shuffle around are empty. Will creating a 'default' filter populate them? Or is this area still under construction as the text seems to suggest?

Thanks! You all are doing a great job!

Transmogrified - possibly a very silly question

I just switched to Transmogrified, which I like a lot, aesthetically speaking. Except, I can't find the 'previous entries' and 'more recent entries' links anywhere When I'm looking at my reading list, there's nothing (that I've found) that I can click that will send me back to previous entries on the list. I've poked around in the 'customize style' and 'account settings' areas, and can't find anything that seems to be related to my problem.

advice/suggestions/the obvious thing that I'm missing?

Help with Expressive/Mixit Theme

I followed the Tutorial: Installing Mixit Themes on Dreamwidth and have been tweaking the layout for a few days now. I just got my mood theme up and running and now I want to make a tiny adjustment to its positioning on my pages. I'd like to have the pic to the left of the currents like it is on my LJ.

Is it possible to do this?

ETA: Yes, it is! I finally went hunting and found the code that will do it.

custom mood themes

Hello!  I couldn't find anything about this in the wiki or this comm, so I was wondering if anyone's had any success with custom mood themes, or is this a known bug?  I tried to create one, and it exists as a theme I can select, but I can't set the moods to go to any images (hosted offsite); after I hit "save changes" it... doesn't, basically.  Any ideas, or should I report a bug?

Userpic import question

I have a question about what might happen when importing userpics from two different sites, and hope someone has tried this already.

Let us say that I have the same pics on both sites, with the same keywords. Let us say I've imported one set already.

If I import the second set, I suspect what will happen is that the first set will get bumped into that "keyword is now a number" state and the second set will take over. Does anyone know if this is, in fact, the case?

Tags and Tagging

So, I've gone and set up a community and have noticed that I can't set who can and cannot set tags or create tags for it. Similarly, I can't get to the manage tags page for my own account. Known bug, bad link, or something else?

Edit: Ok, apparently my proxy and the tags management page don't get along. Thanks!

Change the colors

There have been some posts on how to import custom styles over, but that's too complicated/technical for me.  Just changing the colors from the black/white/gray is all I wanted to do!  I finally stumbled across the method for how to do this, so I thought I'd come here and share:

First go to your LJ (or elsewhere, but these instructions are for LJ):  Click on "Journal" then "Customize Journal Style".  Click on "Style", then you should see all the various colors (and the official computer-speak letters/numbers that tell the computer exactly what color is what).

Now from your DW home page (a new tab makes it easier), Click on "Organize", then "Customize Style".  Click on "Style" on the left-side bar menu.

Now you can take whatever colors you love from your LJ layout and put them into DW!

When you click on Save Changes, the page doesn't go away or anything.  This lets you click on save changes (to apply the changes you just made), then open a new tab to view your journal or reading circle to see how it looks.

ETA: This works for the default Negatives style/theme... not sure if/how it works for other styles.

Question: Compatible Clients for Mac/Apple

I checked up on compatible clients for dreamwidth here and noted that there are a few that will work for Macs. I have typically used xJournal for livejournal updates and for archiving all my entries on my hard drive.

I would like to use a client that will allow for 'downloading history' like xJournal does and that would make crossposting to livejournal easy, as well. I wondered if any of you has tried iJournal, MarsEdit, Phoenix, or xJournal with dreamwidth and, if so, which did you like best? Were you able to archive your entries on your computer? Crosspost?

Setting up filters???

Hi there,

Ok over at LJ I have all my communities as a separate link, so when I click on it only posts from those communities show and aren't all mixed in with my friend's entries. Anyone know how to set up a filter like that here?? I have tried looking under manage circles and manage filters.

Thanks for everyone's help in advance

Privacy settings

This may be covered somewhere in the FAQ but I can't seem to find it. I was wondering if there was an easy way to make all of the entries that I imported from LJ set to a 'private' entry? (Also if anyone knows of a way to add a tag to them all at once so I know they were made on LJ - such as an "LJ Entry" tag for example that would be great too!)

Read... Read? Access... Read?

Over in LJ land, my favorite way to find neat people and interesting conversations is through "friendsfriends". Over the last couple of days, despite searching and plugging in every variant of "readread" that I can think of, I have been unable to find it here.

Is it a feature that didn't make it over/hasn't been coded yet/is planned for implementation post-beta or does it exist now and I'm just oblivious?

(no subject)

It appears as though I have made the error of deleting my style--by which I don't mean my custom style, but the basic style. Now everything in my journal's basically in format=light or something, and if I go to switch styles (back to the current default b&w) or do anything similar, I receive the following error message:

[Error: No layout id given. at /home/dw/current/cgi-bin/LJ/S2Theme.pm line 308. @ dfw-web01]

How do I fix this?

Thank you!
