I want to make a feed to follow this blog: http://symposium.transformativeworks.org on Dreamwidth.

How do I make one?

After much hair-pulling and help from another LibraryThing member, I retraced my steps to their instructions for making a widget for LJ-style sites, including Dreamwidth. [personal profile] baggyeyes suggested I mention it here.

This widget works at DW because it doesn't use JavaScript or any such, but relies on data fetched from LibraryThing.

You can see an example on my journal in the sidebar.

This style of widget was described in a blog post at LibraryThing.

So I felt ready to start experimenting with creating layers, both for layout and for themes. And it gives an error, saying I already have hit the maximum number of layers that I can have. I had accumulated a number of layers (on the Advanced Customization page) through trying out various options so I deleted many that I know I won't be using. But still got the above error. Did I maybe screw something up by deleting these?

A look at the FAQ says that capability for customizing styles is "limited" for free accounts, although I couldn't find what exactly "limited" meant there. So I thought maybe the next step was to get a paid account.

Then yesterday I had a chance to compare notes with a friend here at DW who also has a free account. And she's able to create new layers just fine. She showed me her screen and she had links to "your custom layers" that simply don't appear under my account.

So I am perplexed. Have I run into a bug? Do I need a paid account?

Does anyone have a list of tags/HTML/CSS that actually work on DW profiles? (Or conversely, a list of specifically which ones don't work.) I'd like to redo my profile layout, but I don't want to waste time editing and tweaking a bunch of code only for it to still not look right...

So, I figured this would be a good place to start brainstorming :)

I'm in the process of putting together a site tour for new users: a simple overview of what DW is, how it works, what you can do, how you can find interesting things to read, etc.

I have a very vague idea of what it should include, but I haven't yet decided anything about how it should be structured. I thought that before I come up with anything, though, I'd toss it out to y'all and see what you thought, so as to avoid prejudicing the conversation and brainstorming with my ideas.

So:

* Putting yourself into a new user's shoes -- both someone coming from LJ and someone coming to DW from other backgrounds -- what would you expect to see in a "getting started" type site tour?

* How would you expect it to be structured?

* What would be the most effective things to include that would make you say "oh, wow!"

* For those of you who are relatively new, what were the first pieces of information you sought out? What were the most helpful things to know? What were the things that drew you to DW in the first place?

I checked under the tags for crossposting and notifications and didn't see anything about this.  Is there any way to opt-out of the notifications that my entries were crossposted to LJ?

Edit to clarify:  sorry I meant, the email in my DW inbox that told me my entry was being crossposted.  is there any way to just, not get those emails?

Is there a way to opt out of the birthday notifications? I don't mean not having them sent to me, but keeping DW from notifying people about my birthday.

I thought I read somewhere that it was possible for paid accounts to put in a subscription filter for tags but I can't find it anymore. Am I imagining this? If not, how do I do it?

What with LJ retreading their last fool move wrt redirecting outbound links, I felt like posting my invite codes to my flist over there... But I can't find a place to cut and paste them all. What I get when I copy/paste the stuff found at http://www.dreamwidth.org/manage/invitecodes is a mess of unnecessary tr td etc HTML, so I went to try to do it by hand, but even cutting the individual codes out and pasting them into the appropriate link framework "a href="https://www.dreamwidth.org/create?from=zdashamber&code=COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODE"" gets me tt tags around the pasting.

Eh, hold on, the demo paste I did here in the online "Post an Entry" page is clean plaintext, unlike the pastes I did into Semagic. So I'll just copy and paste from here. :)

Still, it seems like it might be a useful thing to have a box on the Invite Codes page with pre-done simple HTML (and maybe a box with BBcode, too) to copy and paste.

I know this is kind of a random question, but does anyone know if text wrapping (around a picture) is possible when posting an entry?  I would like to be able to post a small image and have the corresponding paragraph of text be right next to it, instead of above or below the picture.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Yes, it's me again...

I'm using Tabula Rasa. At the bottom of my entries, whether not not I have comments beneath, there sits a horizontal line, like the one created by manually html coding < hr >. I think this appeared after the last code push, but can not swear to it 100%.

Anyway, I'd like to get rid of this in my CSS overrides. I've tried:

.entry .tag_hr {display: none;}
&
.entry .bottom_border {display: none;}

But neither guess was the correct one. Anyone able to clue me in? ([personal profile] foxfirefey?) Anyone?

ETA: YES! You're all brilliant. Thank you!

Is it possible to invite users who are using their LiveJournal OpenID to a community? With one user i found their OpenID was too long for the field on the Community Members page. With another OpenID user whose name did fit, i got an error message telling me the user didn't exist.

I have been using the crossposting footer at other sites, which allows linkage to the DW entry. What I wanted to ask is if there is a similar feature which allows the DW post to show the number of comments at, say, LJ? Is there a way to do this in both directions?

I built my layout using Tabula Rasa, and the theme wizard. Googled my way to adding a pinch of CSS code (while being utterly code illiterate) so my icons right justify and there's an added border on the left. I really like what I was able to achieve.

BUT I'm looking for some help in tweaking the look of comments on the page i.e. here. They look too cluttered to me.

What really I want to do is find a way to let the date/time of the comment and the user details (IP Address) be in a far smaller font, or be outlined in a box, so that they don't detract from whatever the actual comment is.

Can anyone help? And how complicated would this be to code so that only the comment boxes changed?

I've just created a community ([community profile] academy_of_words) and I checked off the setting to allow only members to post. But the question has been raised, does this mean that only members can comment on posts? I don't see anything on the Community Settings page or in any of the Community FAQs that refers to comments. Does anyone know? Thanks!

I've just noticed that the time on here isn't showing up correctly - here in the UK, the clocks went forward an hour on Sunday, but it's still showing up on my journal entries as if it hasn't.

Is there anything I can do/should have done to change it?

I have a friend on LJ considering a move/starting a journal @ DW. He asked the following:

"On LJ, I have organized my friends into 'friend groups', so that I can post some things that are visible only to my friends in Ohio, some only visible to my friends in Boston, and various other groups. Does DW support cross-posts that take advantage of LJ's 'friend groups'?"

Does DW currently have this capability? Is it in the works? Or should I open up a suggestion form on my friend's behalf?

Is there a way for an administrator of a community to have all comments posted in the comm mailed to them, without having to track comments on each individual post?

I've been seeing on my LJ friends list a footer note when they've crossposted from Dreamwidth and I'd love to be able to do that as well. But I can't find out how!

The kind of notes I see are:

[read 8 comments at Dreamwidth | comment at Dreamwidth | How to use openID]

(Cross-posted to Dreamwidth and LJ, but comments are welcome at either.)

Where in the original posts the underlined bits are actual links to specific entries. And they are in smaller font.

Is this something I can do at the same time as the original post in DW or do I have to edit the LJ entry later with the links? And is there a standard code or do I have to figure out the links each time and code them in individually?

Hi. I'm really fed up with LJ, and I've decided to start using my DW as my primary journal.

Accordingly:

1. How do I change the alignment of my style modules from left to right?
2. Can I crosspost using Semagic? If not, is there another client I can crosspost with? At the moment I'm stuck with Windows XP, but I'll be moving back to Linux in a few months, when I finish saving up for my new computer.
3. How do I customise the navigation strip colour?

That's it for now. Thanks. I'm sure I'll think of more questions soon.
