Can anyone point me to some resources for making one's style play well with older browsers? Is there an open community that I've missed where it's appropriate to discuss style tips and tricks?

I'm using a Mixit-based theme that, I've been told, is unreadable in some older browsers. I'd like to continue using the style but I'd also like to make it easier for people to read what I post. (And here I want to express my thanks to the Dw folks for putting those style=mine links in the nav bar to facilitate just that.)

I'm a style n00b. Though I've played with CSS on websites, I'm still finding LJ-type style code seriously confusing.

Is it possible to get a list of what feeds are already created? While DW is sorting out some of the kinks in getting them to not duplicate, it might be useful to see what's already in existence...

So I'm brand spanking new and I wanted to see if there were any established poetry communities before attempting to create one. I tried out the Interest search feature and I received this error:

So when I first created my Dreamwidth account, I uploaded 6 icons, which I was planning to use here. Then, when I imported my lj to my Dreamwidth account, it brought my other 9 icons over too. I knew that 9 of my icons were going to be put down as Inactive, but had no clue which ones; I assumed it would be the ones that were imported.

Turns out, only one of my icons, my default, is one I'd put up here to use on a regular basis; the other 5 are very old. Is there a way to change my Inactive ones? I know the ability to do it multiple times would just give us a regular way to cheat the 6 icon rule, I'm not saying I want that. What I mean is a one-time thing to "fix" which icons we now have access to without deleting them completely. Because I'd prefer my old icons to actually show up on my old (ancient) posts and not change over to my default.

will I be provided invite codes tonight once the site is up and public?
I came here by way of someone else who got an invite. Is that why my invite was refused?
also how many invites would i be able to get? or is that just totally random?

My apologies if this is not the best place to post. Redirect me if there is a better community?

I have been working with [livejournal.com profile] fub, testing his linux client called Benzaiten for LJ. On a whim, I tried it with Dreamwidth and it worked as a basic client.

I asked [livejournal.com profile] fub to make some changes so he could support Dreamwidth as well as LJ, and his reply was:
I don't have a dreamwidth account, so I don't know what you are talking about in your other feature requests. :P
My questions are:

1) Is there already a full-fledged linux client? If so, could someone point me to it?

2) If not, is there enough support here that I should continue to nudge [livejournal.com profile] fub to work on Benzaiten? What kinds of features would be nice? What should be left off?

ETA: I have reposted this over on linux4all. Thanks everyone!

how to add a header image to Transmorgified.  Am I missing something simple or does anyone have a link?

Thanks!

I'm currently using Transmogrified Basic for my layout. However, the various modules that used to be in the sidebar (Calendar, tag cloud, list of posts, etc) now appear at the foot of the page, even though I have gone through the Customize Style menu to make sure they are set to 'Sidebar'. Am I being really dim and missing some obvious factor why this isn't working?

In a cross-posted entry (to livejournal), the lj user I specified didn't get a proper link, just their name showing up in plain text, though the link worked in my dwj. Is that normal/something that's being dealt with?

MY IJ is an almost identical back-up copy of my LJ (thank you strikethrough!)

Following the latest code push, I was wondering about the possibility of importing the few entries on my IJ that have comments into my DWJ.

And so I ask:

Does checking the option for Journal comments ONLY mean a re-import of all entries (those without comments too) or would the importer only import (and thus duplicate?) the entries that have comments attached to them?

Anyone know?

I imported my LJ and it brought the entries (apparently fine - haven't looked in detail yet).

However, while it says in my inbox that comments were imported successfully, NONE of them arrived.  I also tried re-importing and adding the "add friends" (the one where it creates the OpenID to add to my access list?) and it, again, said that comments were successfully imported - but none have arrived.

I don't know what I did wrong, and I don't know how to fix it.  Help!

Is there any way of mirroring [livejournal.com profile] _readingroom, my fic journal on LJ, to a comm here? The DW importer currently doesn't support the import of communities, and I do get that most comms have content by several people, but my fic is one of the main things I want to use DW for.

Does anyone know if there's a workaround for this, a script or something (preferably for Mac, not Windows - although if it's only for Windows I'm sure I could find a friend to help me out) that I could use? Or will the DW importer at some point support communities so I could just wait until that time (because I really don't want to lose all my lovely comments)?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Edit: I remembered ljmigrate, which works with comms as well. Haven't been able to test it with DW yet, but it worked with LJ and JournalFen. The one drawback is that it only archives comments, doesn't migrate them.

after following echan's instructions on how to tell firefox to use dw as a feed handler, i proceeded to add my lj feeds to my reading list via the rss link from each feed's website. it was only after i clicked on the feed link at xkcd and was taken to a dw page that told me the address didn't have an account here yet that i started to wonder. (this was after i'd already created a second dinosaur comics feed which i'll have to delete once that function is available.)

something similar happened the other day when i tried to add the ill doctrine feed from the site (before i had set up firefox to attempt to subscribe automatically). i clicked the feed link at ill doctrine, pasted the feed address into the field at the syndication page and was told it didn't exist. however, when i tried to create the feed, i got an error message telling me that the username already existed. so i went looking for it and found the feed and discovered the address for that feed was http://feeds.feedburner.com/illdoctrine, but the address that i had been sent to was http://feeds2.feedburner.com/illdoctrine.

unfortunately the different address weirdness doesn't apply in the cases of xkcd and dinosaur comics, so i have no explanation. except gremlins, perhaps?

of course, now that i've subscribed to various feeds, when i click on them from the feed's website, i go straight to a dw page asking me if i want to modify my subscription. if i remove the subscription and try again, the feed is recognised.

i checked bugzilla and didn't find anything. i don't know if this is a bug or just me. :\ i r confused.

I have seen a lot of questions not just here, but all over, about the cross-posting feature. Since a lot of questions generally means that the answer isn't clear enough or prominent enough, here goes!

The cross-post settings that one sets on the Other Sites page only applies to updates made through the update page, not through any other client (Semagic, LoudTwitter, post by e-mail, through Google Documents, or anything else that is not the update page).

When posting from another client besides the update page, you will have to do one of the following:
  • Use a cross-posting feature from that client.
  • Cross-post manually.
  • Post, then edit the post from the Dreamwidth website (rather than through a client) and save the entry with cross-posting turned on. (This will cross-post it if it was not automatically cross-posted before.)
  • Do without cross-posting.

As more clients are written to include Dreamwidth, cross-posting between sites is likely to become an option in these clients. However, if your client does not tell you that it is cross-posting, or if you did not set up cross-posting in your client, at this time your client is most likely not doing that.

I just figured out how to post to DW from Flickr, and thought I'd share! Original helpful post here.

Log in to Flickr. Go to Your Account > Extending Flickr > Your Blogs (Edit) > Add A(nother) Blog

For LJ, there was a handy option in the drop-down for type of blog. For DW, select Blogger/API Enabled.

The API endpoint is www.dreamwidth.org/interface/blogger. You will also need to enter your DW username and password. Standard password sharing caution applies!

You will be given a drop-down menu with a list of blogs you have access to (including your own). Select your blog. Give your new post-to blog a name. Done!

You can also use this method to post to communities here and on LJ, and (in theory) other LJ based sites.

And now my question: Posting to DW this way (and via Semagic) does not trigger DW's cross-posting, even though I have cross-posting set to automatic. Posting from the DW site cross-posts successfully. Bug? Feature? Am I doing it wrong?

I don't know if this is possible ... though it would be cool.

Is it possible to set a default security level on a tag? For example: tag 'adult' and I'd like every post with this tag to be at the 'nsfw' security level. Is there some way so that when I tag an entry with 'adult' the security level is automatically set at 'nsfw'?

On LJ, I've always had a Basic account and therefore couldn't add feeds, so I'm not sure if this is an issue with DW (less likely but possible) or an issue with me not understanding what the heck I'm doing re: feeds (highly likely).

Basically, I'd love to read my friend's awesome blog, Monster On A Rope (highly recommended if you like reviews of cool music and weird movies, plus good writing in general) on my reading page.

So, I tried to add her as a feed.

First, I added this URL: http://atariflashback.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

And named the feed "monsteronarope." Nothing appeared on my reading page when I selected "Feeds."

I tried it again with this URL: http://atariflashback.blogspot.com/rss.xml

And named it "monsteronarope2." Nothing.

Again, with just: http://atariflashback.blogspot.com

Named it "monsteronarope3," but when I clicked, it just led me back to modify my subscription to the original "monsteronarope_feed" that I'd made.

So, now I've created these three useless things and still can't see her blog. Because I'm an idiot. Help? (Does she have to syndicate herself somehow before I'm able to see her feed? I remember having to jump through some kind of hoop with Blogger to syndicate my blog. But when I type those feed URLs, I see the feed-y lookin' version of her blog. So... um... ?)

I have a question about the import, mostly to clarify, since it's already a done deal for me. I imported my LJ after having cross-posted for a couple weeks, and the import duplicated the cross-posted entries. This is not a problem, I didn't post that much, but it's an argument for not waiting too long to import. :D

My question is: I did all my cross-posting through Semagic, not the DW cross-post option. Would it have made any difference if I had used the DW option, do you guys know? If not, are there plans for that in the future--for the importer to know a post was cross-posted, and A.) not duplicate it, and B.) add in the comments from the other post (I suspect that's the hard part)?

And now I'm not at all sure if this is the right comm for this question. *crosses fingers*

Ok, I've never used Google Analytics before, but I just set up an account so I could track my DW. But I'm not sure what to put in the Google Analytics ID field on the account settings page.

Do you put your Analytics account ID, your account name, or the email address you sign in with?

I've successfully imported several times in the past, but today when i tried it I got the following:

XMLRPC failure: Client error: Invalid text encoding: Cannot display this post. Please see http://www.livejournal.com/support/encodings.bml for more information.

I checked the encodings page, read the explanation, and figured it meant that some weird characters had gotten into the posts somehow. But both posts look completely innocuous. I checked the known issues in the wiki, but didn't see anything that looked like this at first glance.
