Creating a feed

So I tried creating a couple of RSS feeds and I think I may have put in the wrong address for one of them. Do addresses have to start with "feed:"? And if I did put in the wrong address, what do I do about it?

The feed is here: http://nickelinthemachine-feed.dreamwidth.org/profile

I think now that the address I should have used is: feed://feeds2.feedburner.com/nickelinthemachine/BLEI

Thanks for the help.

G Mail Threading

I know a lot of people get their dreamwidth comments sent to gmail and a lot of us are unhappy that the threading is not the relatively simple issue it is on LJ.

The only workaround for the issue at the moment is to add subject lines to your comments. That doesn't make the threading work completely right, but at least it means you won't have 40 message 'conversations' from 10 or 12 different DW entries.

If you can't think of a subject line, why not just repeat the subject line of the entry you're reading? If the entry you're reading also does not have a subject line, just repeat the first line of your comment.

I've been trying it for the past couple of days, and it is better. (Not perfect, because I haven't gotten in the habit 100% yet.) But it's better.

switching from core1 to core2

If you have imported a style from LJ using core1 and would like to change it over to core2 so that you can utilize all of the spiffy new functionality that the styles team have been putting together, there are a few things that you may/will need to do/know:

The styles team has made changes to and standardized lots of things in the base styles set-up. I don't know what all of them are, but the lovely [personal profile] niqaeli has but together a 'quick and dirty' how-to for making some of the necessary changes:

That can be found HERE. *However* be sure to note [personal profile] afuna's comment to that entry about some further code changes (all of which should be done by now, or going in today afaik), so things may 'break' again.

[personal profile] aveleh has also put together another list of 'things that might need changing' HERE at [site community profile] dw_styles (which is a v. good comm to follow if you want to keep up with what the styles team is working on *g*).

eta: [personal profile] grrliz has put together a tutorial for importing Mixit Themes HERE - NOTE that this uses core1, so if you'd like to use core2, you may still have to follow the steps listed above.

If anyone has any other links/tips for switching styles from core1 to core2 - please add to the comments!

Importing Smooth Sailing?

Hello,

I've followed the directions several times.

I can get the journal "look" right, however, when I go to comments on any entry, the icons and user names of the people commenting on that entry are completely stripped out, leaving only the comments themselves.

Really. It's making me bang my head against the wall at this point. I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I've followed directions from here and here to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated.

LJ Friends page

I like Dreamwidth, I like the concept, the ideas, and everything about it. However, a LARGE number of my friends use exclusively LJ. Is there a way to somehow condense that friends page into the DW reading page, so that I don't miss stuff?

Tutorial: Installing Mixit Themes on Dreamwidth

[personal profile] jennem and I have collaborated on a tutorial on how to install LiveJournal's Mixit themes on your Dreamwidth journal. Ironically, it's posted at LiveJournal so you'll have to head on over there to check it out. Hopefully this will help some people out!

(If you have questions, please post them over there as we're trying to keep all the questions in one place to avoid having to duplicate answers.)

Help with Generator Style

I've been trying to set up a community with the Generator style and when I compile it's coming up with this error for: base_url() + "/\">";
This is the error I'm getting:
Compile error: line 873, column 1: Unknown function base_url()

I've tried searching through [profile] how_to over on LJ as well as googling and I haven't been able to come with anything that'll work. It's driving me absolutely bonkers so any help would be great!

eta: Fixed! There was an extra quotation mark in the sucker.

Quick-and-dirty hack for changing colors in Negatives

I posted a very quick-and-dirty tutorial for changing the colors in Negatives, if you find them painful:

http://holyschist.dreamwidth.org/2291.html

It's not a permanent or ideal fix, but it's pretty easy to implement and should hold you over until the official options are all active.

Hope it's helpful and reasonably clear--I'll try to rewrite it in the next few days, since apparently not everyone gets the same starting point I did.

Re: Importing from Livejournal

I think I followed all the instructions correctly, as my tags, etc. were imported according to the message in my DW inbox. However, when I look at the Import Status in the Import Helper, I get this:

lj_comments init as of Never created 1 second ago priority 1239750585
lj_entries init as of Never created 1 second ago priority 1239750585

Does that mean it's working? Forgive me if this is a stupid question, it just wasn't obvious to me and I"m not sure if there's something I missed.

When Importing is a bad decision

I imported all my old LJ entries, and now I think I made the wrong decision. Is there any way to delete more than one entry at a time, or am I stuck deleting each one individually? I have several years of regular posting, so that would be a pain.

viewing comment pages in site scheme

Is there a way to set DW so that comment pages show in the site scheme and not in my journal's style? I'm pretty sure I've seen it on a few journals, but I can't for the life of me find it in either customize style or manage account.

Helpful titles

Greetings, people. I'm one of the community administrators here, but this isn't a pronouncement from On High, just a gentle suggestion. Please could you consider giving your posts a meaningful title, and not just "question" or "newbie needs help"? It'll make the community much more useful for others to browse later on. Of course we'll try to organize everything with tags, but titles would be great too!

Ridiculously nooby question: does the crossposter work yet? I'm seeing people crosspost to their LJs and DWs, but I'm not sure if they're doing it by hand or what. Also, I suspect some of them are using Semagic, which as an Ubuntu user I can't have.

Journal Import Speed

How long does a journal import generally take? My LJ import's been running for roughly two hours at this point, and I'm not sure how to judge whether it's working as expected (intended is another story altogether).

For reference, my LJ's had fairly regular posts for roughly five years, so there is a lot to move. Just looking for a reassurance (or confirmation of broken-ness, either way.)

EDIT: Eight hours later, entry import is complete. It's still chugging on comments. :)

Is it possible (or will be) to redo an import?

I just imported my lj to see how it would work (as described on the faq), and of course since it was from a basic account all my icons are wrong. Also I'm probably not going to bother double posting, but would like the option to use this account (or possibly a new one I set up specifically as a backup) to mirror my lj periodically.

So, is it possible to redo an import? If so will it fix all the broken icons?

The icons thing doesn't bother me that much, people can always look up the original lj article if it's very confusing, but if you can't (and won't be able to) repeatedly update an import that will change the way I decide to divide myself between the two journalling services.

Also, if I get a paid account, do all my icons right, import my lj, and then switch to an unpaid account, will all the extra icons vanish?

(I hope this is clear, I am feeling pretty crappy today)

Importing your Dreamwidth into Facebook

This isn't something I'm doing for myself yet, but I think others might appreciate the tip, as Facebook is wonderful for keeping in touch with friends but not as good at blogging as LJ or DW. However, Facebook has the option to import an external blog feed and automatically post it as a Note.

You are probably going to want to set up the privacy settings first. They can be found here; click the "Edit Settings" link. This will let you specify who on Facebook you'll want to be able to see your posts--it even lets you set up custom groups for this. This could be useful if you don't want your family to see your DW posts, for instance, but would like to show them to some others.

Then, you can go to the external blog import setup and give it one URL. There, you can add the RSS feed to your journal. Only public entries will be fed to your Facebook! Also note that Dreamwidth's default RSS feed setting uses any cuts you make in your entry.

Friends of Friends?

Is the friends of friends feature active on DreamWidth? A quick search makes me think it is (or will be). How does one access it?

Tagging in getting_started

Hi! I am one of the other friendly administrators.

To keep things in here reasonably organized, there are a number of tags at the community's disposal. A list of all active tags can be found here: http://getting-started.dreamwidth.org/tag/

Tags come in three basic flavors: tags that start with !, tags that start with ~, and tags that don't start with any special character.
  • Tags that start with ! are reserved for administrative-type tags, such as !administrative. These conveniently sort to the top of the list.

  • Tags that start with ~ are currently either ~questions or ~answers. Later, this may be expanded to other member-type tags as needed. These conveniently sort to the bottom of the list.

  • Tags that don't start with any special character are the category of thing (area of site, common task) that the post is related to. Many of these tags correspond to a category of the Frequently Asked Questions. It is possible for a post to touch on more than one category.

Currently, creating new tags, removing tags from entries, and adding existing tags to entries is limited to community administrators. If you think of a useful tag that hasn't been created yet, or a post that should be tagged differently than it currently is, please let an administrator know!

A tip of the mod hat to [livejournal.com profile] rahmbamarama for "this is a tag about tagging". :D
